They cover how to respectfully use the stories and images shared here, how donations are received and receipted, and what to expect at our events. Please read them together with our Privacy Policy.

- Many of the stories, teachings and images here were shared by people in the Maskwacis communities, and cultural knowledge belongs to the communities it comes from. Please ask before reusing anything from the site.
- Event details can change, and photos or video may be taken at events. Let us know if you would rather not be photographed.
- Information on this site is general. It is not medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.
1. About these Terms
These Terms of Use (the “Terms”) apply to your use of 1mac.ca and all of its pages, forms and features (the “site”). By using the site, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information.
Some activities, such as registering for an event or giving through a donation platform, may come with additional terms that are shown to you at the time, and some forms may ask you to confirm that you have read these Terms before you send them. Additional terms apply to that activity together with these Terms. If they conflict, the terms for the specific activity apply to that activity.
If you are under 18
Everyone is welcome to explore the site. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian needs to register you for events and to make any gift or payment for you. Children under 13 should not send us personal information through the site. Instead, please ask a parent or guardian to contact us.
2. Who we are
The Mamawi Atosketan Centre (“MAC” or “the Centre”) is a ministry of The Alberta Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (the “Alberta Conference”), a registered charity. Mamawi Atosketan means “working together” in Cree, and that is how we hope to serve.
The Centre is in Maskwacis, Alberta, on Treaty 6 territory, the home of the four Nations of Maskwacis: Samson Cree Nation, Ermineskin Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe and Montana First Nation. We are thankful to serve alongside these communities.
In these Terms, “we,” “us” and “our” mean the Centre , and “you” means anyone who uses the site.
3. Using the site respectfully
We ask everyone to use the site in a good way, with the same respect you would show as a guest in someone’s home. When you use the site, please do not:
- break any law, or use the site to threaten, harass, bully, exploit or discriminate against anyone;
- post or send anything hateful, obscene, defamatory or misleading, or anything that mocks the beliefs, cultures, languages or ceremonies of any people;
- pretend to be someone else, or misrepresent your connection with any person, family, Nation or organization;
- copy, download, record or reshare images, videos, stories or cultural content from the site, except as allowed in section 4 and section 5;
- gather personal information about other people from the site, such as email addresses, phone numbers or photos;
- use bots, scrapers or other automated tools to copy content or overload the site, including to train artificial intelligence, except for ordinary search-engine indexing;
- send spam, chain letters or advertising through our forms or contact details;
- upload viruses or other harmful code, try to gain unauthorized access to the site or its systems, or interfere with how the site works; or
- use the site for commercial purposes without our written permission.
If we believe these Terms have been broken, we may remove content, block access or take other reasonable steps, and we may report unlawful activity to the appropriate authorities.
4. Our content and intellectual property
Unless we say otherwise, the text, photographs, videos, graphics, logos and design of the site are owned by the Alberta Conference or used with the permission of their owners, and are protected by copyright and other laws. Stories, teachings, language and other cultural knowledge shared on the site are covered by section 5. The Mamawi Atosketan Centre name and logo may not be used in a way that suggests a connection with us, or our endorsement, without our written permission.
You are welcome to view the site and share links to its pages. You may also print or save a page for your own personal, non-commercial use, as long as you do not change it and you keep any credits or notices. Any other use, such as reposting, editing or publishing our images, videos or text, or using them for fundraising or advertising, needs our written permission and, for cultural content, the permission described in section 5.
Names, logos and trademarks of other organizations that appear on the site, including those of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and our partners, belong to their owners. Showing them here does not give you any right to use them.
If you believe something on the site uses your work or your image without permission, please contact us and we will look into it promptly.
5. Stories, language and cultural knowledge
Some of what you see on this site comes from people in the Maskwacis communities: their faces and voices, their stories, teachings, songs and prayers, their art and designs, and words in the Cree language (nêhiyawêwin). People share these with us in trust so that others can learn and be encouraged, and we try to honour that trust.
We recognize that First Nations have the right to decide how their stories, knowledge and information are shared. We do not claim ownership of the cultural knowledge, stories, teachings or language shared by Elders, Knowledge Keepers, families or Nations. These belong to the people and communities they come from, even where we hold the copyright in a particular photograph, recording or page.
For that reason, please do not copy, record, adapt, translate, publish, sell or otherwise reuse this content, or use it to build or train artificial intelligence or other software, without asking us first. Where we can, we will help you reach the person, family or Nation whose permission is needed. Our permission alone may not be enough.
Some ceremonies and teachings are not meant to be recorded or shared publicly, and we aim to honour those protocols. If you believe something on the site was shared without the right permission, is inaccurate, or should be taken down out of respect for a person, family or community, please tell us. We will review it promptly and, where appropriate, remove it.
6. Videos and other third-party content
Our Videos page and other parts of the site may include videos, maps, fonts, social media posts, giving forms or other content supplied by outside services, such as YouTube. That content is provided by those services under their own terms of use and privacy policies, and they may change or remove it at any time.
When a page with third-party content loads, and again when you play a video or interact with that content, the provider may collect information about your visit, as explained in our Privacy Policy. We encourage you to read the provider’s own terms and privacy policy.
Please respect the people who appear in our videos. You are welcome to share links to them, but please do not download, edit or re-upload them.
7. Messages and material you send us
When you contact us or send us a message, story, photo, video or other material (a “submission”), please make sure it is accurate, respectful and yours to share.
You keep ownership of your submission. You allow us to use it to respond to you and to do what you asked of us. If you also tell us we may share it, for example a story or photo for our website, newsletter or social media, you give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to use, copy, publish and lightly edit it (for length, clarity or privacy) for the Centre’s ministry and communications. You may ask us to stop sharing it at any time. We will stop any new use and remove it from the site and other channels we control, but we cannot recall copies that have already been printed or shared by others.
When you give us permission to share a submission, you confirm that you have the right to do so, and that anyone who can be recognized in it, or a parent or guardian for anyone under 18, has agreed to it being shared.
Unless a form specifically asks for it, such as allergy or emergency-contact details on an event registration form, please do not send confidential, sensitive or urgent information through the site. Never send payment card or banking details by email or through a contact form. Messages are not monitored around the clock. We may choose not to publish, or may edit or remove, any submission.
8. Donations
Thank you for considering a gift to the Mamawi Atosketan Centre. Your support helps build the Centre and its work with people of all ages in the Maskwacis communities.
Who receives your gift
Gifts for the Centre are received by the Alberta Conference, a registered charity. You can give in the ways listed on our Donate page, which may include a third-party giving platform or Interac e-Transfer. When you give through a third-party platform or payment service, your payment is processed by that provider under its own terms and privacy policy. Please follow the instructions on the Donate page carefully. Some giving methods may ask you to register or to include your contact details before an official receipt can be issued.
Directing your gift
To make sure your gift supports the Centre, please designate it as the Donate page explains. Gifts designated for the Centre are used for the Centre’s work. If a particular need has been fully met, or a project cannot go ahead, the Alberta Conference may apply the gift to the most closely related purpose that fits its charitable purposes. Gifts received without a clear designation may be applied according to the Alberta Conference’s giving policies, which means they may support the Conference’s wider work rather than the Centre.
Official tax receipts
The Alberta Conference issues official donation receipts for income tax purposes for eligible gifts, following the Income Tax Act, the rules of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and its own receipting policies. To receive a receipt, please give your full name and mailing address. We cannot issue tax receipts for gifts of time or services. The tax credit you may claim depends on your own situation, so please speak with a tax adviser if you have questions.
A gift, freely given
A donation is a voluntary gift. Unless a fundraising event or appeal clearly says otherwise, you will not receive goods or services in return. If you do receive something of value in connection with a gift, such as a meal at a fundraising dinner, CRA rules mean that any official receipt can only be for the eligible amount: the amount of your gift minus the value of what you received. In some cases, CRA rules do not allow a receipt to be issued at all.
Mistakes and refunds
Because donations are gifts, they are generally not refundable. If you believe a gift was made in error, for example the wrong amount, a duplicate payment or a charge you did not authorize, please contact us as soon as possible, and preferably within 30 days. We will work with you and the Alberta Conference to put it right. If a refund is made, any official receipt already issued for that gift will be cancelled or replaced. Gifts made through a third-party platform may also be subject to that platform’s refund rules.
Information about donors is handled as described in our Privacy Policy. We do not sell, rent or trade donor information.
9. Events
Event information
Details about events on the site, including dates, times, places, speakers and activities, may change. Events may be postponed or cancelled, for example because of weather, safety concerns or other circumstances. Please check our Events page or contact us before you travel. If an event has a fee, any refund terms will be shown when you register.
Registration
Some events may need registration or have limited space. Please give accurate information when you register, including anything we need to know to keep you safe. A parent or guardian must register anyone under 18.
Taking part
Taking part in events and activities is your choice. We take reasonable care to keep our events safe, but some activities, such as sports, outdoor programs or travel, carry risks that cannot be removed entirely. Please follow the directions of event leaders and take part only in activities that are right for you. To the extent permitted by law, you accept those ordinary risks when you choose to take part. Some activities may need a separate consent or release form, which we will share with you before the activity.
Children and youth
Unless a child is registered in a program that provides its own supervision, children must be supervised by a parent, guardian or another responsible adult at all times.
Photos and video at events
Photos and video may be taken at our events to share the life of the Centre on the site, in newsletters and on social media. We will try to let people know when this is happening, for example through signs or announcements. If you would rather not be photographed or filmed, please tell the photographer or an event host and we will do our best to respect your wishes. We ask for your permission before featuring you in promotional or fundraising materials. For anyone under 18, we ask a parent or guardian, and we do not name a child alongside their image without that permission. If you see an image of yourself or your child that you would like removed, contact us and we will remove it from the site and other channels we control. We cannot recall printed materials already handed out, or copies that others have saved or shared. Our Privacy Policy has more detail.
Ceremonies and cultural protocols
Some ceremonies, prayers and teachings must not be photographed, filmed or recorded. Please follow the guidance of Elders, Knowledge Keepers and event hosts, and ask before taking photos or recordings of others, especially Elders, children and ceremonies. Please do not use photos or recordings you take at our events for commercial purposes, or in any way that disrespects the people or practices shown.
Conduct
We want every gathering to be safe and welcoming. Please treat everyone with kindness and respect, and follow any posted facility rules, including rules about alcohol, cannabis, tobacco and other substances. Harassment, violence, threats and discrimination are not acceptable. We may refuse entry to, or ask to leave, anyone whose behaviour puts others at risk or disrupts an event.
10. Links to other websites
The site may link to other websites, such as those of the Alberta Conference, partner organizations, giving platforms and social media. We provide these links for convenience. We do not control those websites and are not responsible for their content, security or privacy practices, and a link does not mean we endorse everything on them. You are welcome to link to our pages, as long as your link is not misleading and does not suggest a partnership or endorsement that does not exist.
11. Accuracy and availability
We work to keep the site accurate and up to date. Information about the Centre, including its building, programs, schedules and people, may change as the Centre grows, and the site may sometimes contain errors or out-of-date information. We may correct or change content at any time without notice. We do not promise that the site will always be available or work without interruption, and we may change, suspend or discontinue any part of it. If you have trouble using any part of the site, including because of a disability, please contact us and we will try to give you the information another way.
12. Disclaimer
The site and its content are provided “as is” and “as available.” To the extent permitted by law, we make no promises or warranties of any kind, express or implied, about the site, including about its accuracy, completeness, reliability or fitness for a particular purpose, or that it is free of viruses or other harmful code. Nothing in these Terms removes or limits any right or protection you have under laws that cannot be waived or limited by agreement, including consumer protection laws.
13. Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, the Centre, the Alberta Conference and their staff, volunteers and representatives are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss or damage that arises from or relates to your use of, or inability to use, the site or any linked or embedded third-party content. This section applies to your use of the site. It does not exclude or limit any liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, or our responsibilities under privacy law for the personal information we hold. Taking part in events is covered in section 9 and in any terms or forms for a particular event.
14. Indemnity
If you misuse the site, break these Terms or infringe someone else’s rights through a submission, and a claim is made against the Centre or the Alberta Conference as a result, you agree to be responsible for the reasonable losses, costs and legal fees that result, to the extent permitted by law.
15. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect through the site, how we use, share and protect it, and your choices and rights, including how to ask to see or correct your information.
16. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada that apply in Alberta. The courts of Alberta have jurisdiction over any dispute about these Terms or the site. This does not take away any right you may have under applicable law to bring a claim in another court. If you have a concern, we encourage you to contact us first so we can try to resolve it together.
17. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes to the site, the Centre’s programs or the law. When we do, we will post the updated Terms on this page and change the “Last updated” date. If a change is significant, we will try to draw attention to it, for example with a notice on the site. Changes take effect when they are posted and do not apply to anything that happened before then. If you keep using the site after a change is posted, the updated Terms apply to your use from that point on.
18. General
- Severability. If any part of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the rest of the Terms still apply, and that part will be applied as far as the law allows.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce part of these Terms right away, we can still enforce it later.
- Entire terms. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and any additional terms for a specific activity, make up the whole agreement between you and us about your use of the site.
- Headings and summary. The headings and the “In plain words” summary are there to help you find your way. If the summary differs from the full Terms, the full Terms apply.
- Language. These Terms are written in English. If you would like help understanding any part of them, please contact us and we will be glad to talk them through with you.
